Excerpts from Address
EXCERPTS FROM THE ADDRESS OF
ARCHBISHOP GEORGE RIASHI
ON THE OCCASION OF HIS EPISCOPAL ORDINATION
On the 19th July, 1987, His Grace Archbishop George Riashi was consecrated a bishop by His Beatitude Maximos V Hakim, the Patriarch throughout the world, in St. Paul's Church, Harrisa, Lebanon. He thus became the first Melkite Archbisop of Australia and New Zealand.
Here is a summary of what the new Archbishop said in his address at the ordination.
1. I came to serve and not be served.
2. My concept of authority is as it states in the Gospel.
3. I hold to St. Basil the Great's tradition of authority, which is one of service.
4. It is my desire that the hearts of all Melkite people be filled with faith.
5. It is also my desire that they would be filled with love.
6. It is my desire that the spirit of Lebanon be renewed.
7. It is my wish that Lebanon breaks from the vicious circle of its past and move towards the future.
8. It is my wish that outside powers would take their hands off Lebanon, which is a citadel of human rights.
9. I also wish at this time to send rny blessings to the people of Australia.
10. May God bless you all, as well as all our Melkite Catholic Community and Lebanon.
