THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE THEOTOKOS
FEAST DAY: 25 March
ICON: The Archangel Gabriel is in motion, legs apart as if running to carry the message from God to the Virgin Mary. The Staff held in his hand is the staff of a messenger. The Greek word, Kontakion, means "from a pole". A scroll was rolled up and placed inside a pole and sent by a messenger. The word, angel, means, messenger. In this icon the Archangel carries the pole, which carries a message from God.
The Theotokos is shown in the icon either standing or sitting involved with her work usually with a pedestal under her feet, signifying her honourable position. In some icons the focus of the Theotokos and the angel is upward toward the circle and ray of light. The upturned face of the angel directs the Theotokos to the source of his message, but his stance is forward toward the Theotokos who is the focus of the icon.
The Feast of the Annunciation honours the incarnation of the Divine Word in the womb of the Virgin Mary. This mystery bestows on Mary her gracious and deserved title―Theotokos, meaning, Mother of God. Recall the Archangel Gabriel greeted her with the words, "Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among all women."
Mary’s life was destined to be extraordinary. By her wholehearted acceptance to be the mother of God, she redeemed humanity. She says,
“Let it be done to me according to your word.”
Mary would carry, birth, nurture and teach Jesus, with her husband Joseph. In recognising this honour, she says, “All generations will call me blessed".
The Church, in the name of humanity, honours Mary as the Most Holy Theotokos. Mary’s title and Feast Day acknowledge her virtues, grace and dignity and her revered position in the Church.

هذه ذكرى تجسّد الكلمة، وبه صارت العذراء مريم امّ الله. هذه الأمومة الإلهية هي أساس النعم والامتيازات كلّها التي غمر بها الله مريم العذراء:" السلام عليك يا ممتلئة نعمة، الرب معك". إن أم الكلمة المتجسد، آدم الجديد، ورأس البشرية لخلاصها، أي سيدتنا مريم العذراء هي أيضاً بالروح أمّ الجنس البشري، أمنُّا جميعاً، بسبب اتحادنا بالكلمة، بوصفنا أعضاء لجسد واحد هو رأسه، تنبع الحياة الإلهية فيه. مريم العذراء، برضوخها لإرادة الله ("أنا أمة الرب، فليكن لي بحسب قولك") الذي اختارها في مخطط التجسّد والفداء، أضحت شريكة الكلمة في تحقيق هذا القصد الإلهي لحياة البشرية البنوية والشكر الحميم، والوعي العميق للسرّ الذي بدأ اليوم يظهر للعالم، بفتاة الناصرة الوديعة والناصعة الطهر، " لأنه نظر إلى تواضع أمته، فها منذ الآن تغبطني جميع الأجيال، لأن القدير صنع بي عظائم".
