“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

The reports thus far from Damascus reveal a horrific situation at the sacred Antiochian Greek-Orthodox Church of Saint Elias the Prophet. Even by contemporary standards this blasphemous rebellion against the Law of both God and men leaves us astounded.

The present situation in Damascus is but one more proof that amongst some there has arisen a total disregard for the safety of noncombatant civilians regardless of where they are gathered and for what purpose. In this case the crime is even more heinous because of the religious nature of the place.

Our several Churches, Catholic and Orthodox, that constitute the Australasian-Middle East Christian Apostolic Churches (AMEC), have especially strong links with the City of Damascus. Many of our people have relatives and friends who remain in the City and throughout Syria.  We cannot but feel much anxiety for their continued safety.

This outrage when placed within the context of the increasing sectarian violence directed at religious minorities in Syria does not augur well for the future. Hence, it is with the greatest urgency that we call upon the Syrian government to take whatever lawful measures are necessary to ensure the security of all Syrian citizens regardless of their religious affiliation.

To our fellow Christians in Syria, our brothers and sisters in the Faith, we address the words of Our Lord in the Gospel of St John,

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be fearful.” (John 14:27)

Beloved Brethren, be assured of our constant prayerful support during these times of trial.
